Worried that your son doesn’t like reading? Concerned about his english results?  Every parent (and teacher) I know wants their child (and students) to be a strong reader.  It has so many benefits and stretches across all other subject areas.  Yet why do so many of our boys struggle with reading and literacy?

Last year I released an online learning resource Literacy for Boys.   It was developed after my experiences teaching boys, both in the classroom and in tutoring sessions.  I found that I was worried about boys who resisted reading and I saw their results (and confidence) slide accordingly; it literally kept me up at night.

Parents’ concerns

Talking with parents, they know intuitively that their children need to read daily, but they’re stuck on how to help their son enjoy it.  Many parents feel guilty because they may not be readers themselves, and worry that their son is following their example and reads reluctantly (or not at all).

A Reading Resource

With over 20 years of teaching experience (many in all-boys’ schools), tutoring countless boys and having two sons, I know boys.  I knew I had to turn my reading passion into a productive resource for both parents and teachers.

You see, boys WILL read if they are engaged.  Not all boys are sports-mad or science-focussed.  You have to capture their interest.  This basic diagram illustrates our philosophy of engagement, practice, improvement.  Reading confidence will follow. (We’ve used a fishing analogy!)

How to Engage Boys in Reading

Summing Up

For parents who are worried about their son’s reluctance to read (and their progress in English), they don’t need to anymore.  As little as 20 minutes a day spent reading will make a huge difference in what your son is capable of achieving.  As a result, with you as his parent reading-coach and LFB to support him, you both have a roadmap to enjoying reading.
